     Coins minted at the Dahlonega Georgia branch mint have long been coveted by collectors. Output at the Dahlonega mint was always low, yet the mint operated until Confederate forces seized the building at the outset of the Civil War. The Dahlonega Mint only produced gold coins, many of which were poorly made.

    The 1859-D half eagle has one of the lowest mintages of all Dahlonega half eagles. Only the extremely expensive 1861-D half eagle have a lower mintage number! Most known examples are in Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition. The 1861-D half eagle is difficult to find in all grades but an extreme rarity in a Mint State condition.
