Coins minted at the Dahlonega Georgia branch mint have long been coveted by collectors. Output at the Dahlonega mint was always low, yet the mint operated until Confederate forces seized the building at the outset of the Civil War. The Dahlonega Mint only produced gold coins, many of which were poorly made.
The $5 1858-D has a mintage of only 15,362 coins. Most examples, when you can find them, are graded Extremely Fine or About Uncirculated. Mint State coins are rare with the highest known grade being a MS65 example graded by NGC. As the populations from NGC and PCGS suggest this 1858-D half eagle is a true rarity and offers its owner the opportunity to add this special coin from the beloved and famous Dahlonega Mint. |
