| Coins minted at the Dahlonega Georgia branch mint have long been coveted by collectors. Output at the Dahlonega mint was always low, yet the mint operated until Confederate forces seized the building at the outset of the Civil War. The Dahlonega Mint only produced gold coins, many of which were poorly made. The 1859-D Liberty Head quarter eagle has an incredibly low mintage of only 2,244. This issue has the distinction of being the last issue of this denomination from the Dahlonega Mint. Mint State examples like this one are rare and hard to find. The Smithsonian Institutions example is only an AU specimen. |
